Today the media carried pictures and reports of the opening of the Red line in Dubai. This is the world's longest automated metro system linking large parts of the city eg Jumeriah Beach, Alantas and Jumeriah Palm, Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall to the city centre. From my world view the metro runs parallel beside the the main road, Shaikh Zayed Road, linking the quite affluent areas with the city. On Saturday the metro cars could be seen on the skyway beside and towering above the road, trialling the line. This pic is of the metro, minus the cars and the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, currently. While unfinished this photo doesn't give the building justice. It begins as lots of smaller towers, and slowly merges into one. It's built of stainless steel and glints in the sun. Oh so beautiful.
Did you know Queen Elizabeth opened the Trade Centre in Dubai in 1979, then the tallest building at 187 m. Now it's but a moderate sized building in comparison in the business district. So next trip to Dubai....... metro here I come.
