Vintgar Gorge or Soteska Vintgar

Croatia and Slovenia are renown for their national parks, their lakes and their natural environment. We intend to enjoy as much of this as possible and spend time walking in these areas. From our experience here so far and all the reading I have done suggests that the residents of both these countries really use and enjoy the outdoors. We began the day with a visit to Vintgar Gorge, about 4 kms out of Bled. Having written a blurb about enjoying the outdoors we resisted the challenge of walking of biking to the gorge and drove instead. A wise decision when you see the steepness of some of the hills leading to the gorge. The Vintgar Gorge is 1600 m long winding way way along side the river. In parts the walk reminded me of Pelorus Sound and in other parts as the walk way was narrow and cling to the gorge face suspended above the water Hawkes Crag on the way to the West Coast. The scenery was the stuff that is captured and put on calendars. Trout swam in the pools and life seemed perfect. On completing the walk we had to turn around and walk back to our car, the downside of driving, however a very pretty downside to appreciate and enjoy.
