Marie the owner of the B&B where we are staying, was full of excellent places to visit and experience around the area. As we had liked the Vscki pass Marie recommended the Predel pass in the Julian Alps looking out towards Italy. The pass winds its way up the valley through many tiny villages and into the forest area of yet another national park. 70% of Slovenia is forested and something small like 20% in national parks.
Towering above the fur and aspen trees are the fantastic Dolomite mountains. These rock formations separate Slovenia from Italy. I thought the Vscki Pass was fantastic, the Predel Pass was totally different and as awe-inspiring.
Suddenly we were at the top with Italy looming below us and an inviting turquoise lake. The top of the pass in the war days has been guarded by a large bunker system looking down the valley towards Austria. With no border control one simply drives across, past a derelict border post and the usual EU signage welcoming the driver to the new country. So why not indeed?
In the valley floor I knew we were in Italy. A Vespa motorcycle club was out for a ride on a Sunday, parked at a cafe drinking coffee and wine. So when in Italy, (park the car around the corner from the bikes) and do as the Italians do! Enjoy the summer day and the wine!
