Ljubljana also advertises a hostel in an old converted prison that has been painted and decorated by local artists. While initially we had planned to stay at Hostel Celica and "enjoy" a night behind bars, as planning for the trip decreed we stay longer in Ljubljana than two nights and being creatures of comfort we opted for an apartment instead. Today while out and about exploring the city we dropped in at Hostel Celica for a visit and a cup of coffee. In both Ljubljana and Zagreb there is "controlled" and graphic art on the buildings and the trains. Celica was no exception. The local artists really had created some fantastic art on the old prison walls and surrounding buildings. The inside of the hostel and the cells inside the prison were pristine and really would be fun to stay in, provided you chose the right cell. As everyone was different and catered for varying numbers. Celica caters for tourists and offered a full lunch for 6 Euro to anyone passing by. Lunch consisted of the choice of 2 soups, 3 main dishes accompanied by salads from the salad bar and ice cream with a berry sauce for desert. One could hardly pass an offer like that up, especially when there was asparagus soup on the menu. Why not indeed?

The prison accommodation looks ok. Nice art too. Seeing those magnificent 3 storied buildings lining the streets as though they have been there for centuries makes us realise how young a country NZ is.
