Sports equipment

The sports teachers have introduced some sports equipment for the girls to use at break time in the primary and middle school. This is a first. At breaks there is a real rush now to get down to the covered courtyard to grab a ball, or a hoop or a skipping rope, and the girls are just loving it. I watched a couple of sweethearts today skip away almost the whole of the break, in at least 35 degrees. Under their uniforms they wear trackpants and t-shirts so imagine how hot they must get. It's really interesting to see who excels with this equipment. It is nearly always the African children, the locals have no idea what to do. Today we tried to show them how to turn a long skipping rope... talk about laugh Trev! Its a wonder no one did any serious damage to themselves. I see the African kids out playing on the streets, riding bike and throwing stones, yes even in the UAE with well behaved kids they still throw stones at each other. They do the physical stuff while the Emirati chn stay indoor and watch TV. You can understand why diabetes and obesity are huge problems here in UAE especially in children. My challenge is to get a long, long rope and get a few more skipping.

Play is a part of every young mammal's development. Puppies or kids. All do and it is a bit disturbing for the people if the young apparently skip that stage. How about hop-scotch, "What's the Time Mr Wolf, or chasing? Good on the teachers who initiate this. How about the boys school?

One begins to wonder whether the Emirati might think such things beneath them or is it that they have little idea of how to have fun? A perturbing thought.
