All the date palms around have the new ripening dates hanging from them and are very obivious at the moment. The Municipality are out in force surrounding the bunches of dates with nets to protect the fruit from birds and other villians that may well come and steal the fruit. People? Although the date husk/ shell is still quite green looking, they do need to turn a creamy colour before the date inside is ripe. The fruit is growing very rapidly as the summer temperatures rise. On arrival last Septemeber they were picking dates so we have time to wait. Fresh dates that have been out of their husk for a bit are morish and rather sweet. I'm not so keen on the really dates where you peel off the husk / shell. They taste a bit sour to my untrained palette. Dates from around the Gulf region look and taste different. I really enjoy the sweetness of Saudi dates, which are red in comparison to other varieties. And you just thought a date was a date?

Funny how the dates are very edible and morish in UAE. It seems in NZ it is only when dates are in date scones that I feel compelled to have another one.
Just looking in those shops that sell nothing but dates leaves one bewildered for choice. In the end we didn't buy any. However we did get to enjoy dates we bought at Carrefour. Nothing beats a succulent date in the UAE.
