Our company is quite cosmopolitan and seems to employ people from around the globe. Jackie came to UAE with her sister Gayle who came as an MA, Management advisor. Both sisters had worked in Qatar, an Island nation in the Arabian Gulf, about an hours flight away. Jackie worked on a short term contract as an English advisor at my girls school until Christmas. However she has decided to return to USA and contemplate her next move which could well be to Peru. She has a friend recruiting for Peru. I am such a newbie on the international teaching circuit.
Being expat and being part of the company we tend to move in the same circles, and go to the same places. While this does have a down side, and you can live in each others pockets, the upside is the fellowship, the network of friends you gather along the way, and the activities you do. Jackie and Gayle did the same camel ride with me in January. Jackie and Gayle are both generous and friendly people who have hours of hilarious and interesting stories about their travels. Each sister chips in with little anecdotes to embellish the others stories. Sadly tonight I said my goodbyes to Jackie with the "if you are ever in Minnesota, come visit". For me being in the UAE is a bit like a whirl pool, where we swish around together, and then float off. Briefly other people touch our lives and we theirs and then we move apart. I am sure life is like that any where, however I am enjoying meeting others from around the globe.
