Saturday morning and the Minisitry of Works, UAE branch, are at it again, out building up the street outside our apartment. 6:30 am Saturday morning. No sleeping in.....
On Tuesday evening they dropped off truckloads of soil / sand on the street and over the next 2 days have proceeeded to spread this as a base course over the curent sand and compact it all down. The level of the steet has risen about 30 cms. I know this because we no longer need the concrete block steps, to step up from the road into our apartment carport.
This new "street" must really be getting serious as today there is a surveyor out there taking levels, and another chap wandering around with huge sheets of map type paper, not to mention the huge rollers that cause the whole apartment block to vibrate. Both these men and the foreman of the job are wearing work boots and hard hats. Maybe just maybe there are a few health and saftey proceedures in this country. Yesterday in our paper was a report that 3 men deny blame for the fatal death of a co-worker who had a small wall collapse on him while he was filling in the sand in the gap infront of the wall the wall.
So many parts of the article are questionable.
SB the 50 year old Indian safety worker(they never mention names, just intitials) said he noticed the injury to the vitcim's head after he was pulled free from the collapsed wall. SB added that "the victim was wearing his helmet but it had fallen off during the accident, records showed". Yeah right
Records showed the wall pinned his lower right leg, with the rest of his body free..... hmmm I'd be supicious too.
Now across the street is the new apartment construction. On Tuesday night they appeared to be laying reinforcing steel. Whatever it was they did it well into the night with huge helogen lights set up to provide lightening to basically the wider area too. Today they are filling in sand, painting the base of the blocks and resurecting the boxing ready for the next job. Today there are only about 6 workers out there, and you guessed it not a hard hat or a pair of workboots in site.

Might be able to get that car out soon. In the second photo, are those the worker's accommodation at the rear with the satellite dishes on top? Almost akin to camping out.
The web structure of the foundations intrigue me. It will be interesting to watch the next step. The blackened interior faces of the back sections suggest water(?) proofing so I wonder if they will fill in each section with rubble or sand before the flooring goes down. I expect they have done all that before!
Like Ian I am intrigued with the layout of the foundations. The rooms look small if they are rooms. Maybe it just a basement?
An observation I made while cruising the streets and highways of the UAE with you was the prevalence of warning decals/tape on the rear of most trucks and machinery. Looking at the rear of the grader reminded me.
