Construction at 217 Nguyen Van Thu Street has stepped up a gear in the last week. The workers are now beginning feverish activity at midnight until about 3:00 am. Not a popular activity with the tenants in 215 Nguyen Van Thu Street I add. The one remaining digger is now dogging out the basement area,. Suddenly, the work that has been in progress for the last 5 months becomes obvious. Right around the perimeter are the concrete piles, almost side by side. The heads of the piles have been jack hammered down to expose the reinforcing steel inside. This steel has been incorporated into the boxing that marks out the perimeter of the building. The few remaining piles are being crushed and used for foundations. Between each pile on the perimeter, the workers are adding a layer of bricks. Soon to be appearing are the foundations.
Land in HCMC is very expensive and this building reflects how every inch is built on. The boxing for the building is butted right against the existing boundary and boundary fences. In some areas the build of the new house just butts up against the neighbouring dwelling.
Out on the street the little men rush about with brooms early in the morning clearing and cleaning the mud off the road left by the trucks leaving the site. Its interesting to note how perturbed the builders are with keeping the road clean. Its interesting to note that larger issues such as noise abatement, health and safety, living conditions, minimum building requirements from a boundary are ignored. Let me think, a clean road, or a safe building site?

Interesting way of building. Wonder if the large cavity basement, will be filled right in with tonnes of concrete? Would explain the bricks as they are not structurally sound but would stop the concrete from oozing away. Watch this space!
