Of all days to forget to take the camera when I went out, today was it. I walked past a wedding party going into the reception not far from my apartment, so by the time I fumbled around for my camera, the bridesmaids and groomsmen had gone inside. Vietnamese weddings are a little different to our Western wedding.
Firstly the bride usually with a lovely white dress, and her groom, have their photos taken around the city, about a month before the big day. The photographer and his assistants have various props that are used in the photo shoot eg basket of flowers, picnic baskets, parasols, rugs etc. The happy couple move around the city using stately buildings as back drops eg the Opera House steps, the Cathedrial ye olde 2 storied hotel with the verandah and up stairs the hanging baskets of flowers. Now that one was interesting because the couple stood in the road using the hotel as a back drop. While this in itself is not surprising, the fact that the road was a moderately busy street and the traffic went around them and the photographer was surprising.
I have seen various wedding receptions at a wedding hall close to my apartment. One had 6 bridesmaids and 6 groomsmen, while across the road as the guests waited there were 7 flowers girls milling around on the footpath.
Today's wedding was the actual day of the wedding. The bride, and the respective mothers wears a traditional Vietnamese dress the Aoi Dai, pronounced our eye. Red of course is a very lucky colour so most brides wear red. The Aoi Dai is a very long straight dress, almost to the ground, and split up the sides to just above the waist. In a matching fabric the woman wears a pair of long silky trousers, with the dress floating over the top. Very nice and very comfortable.
