Halloween celebrations seem to have a presence in Ho Chi Minh City. Although Halloween is an Americanism, I guess we are caught up in the influences of a Western Society and the residue of the American war influence. The small yoghurt parlour at the top of my street was appropriately decorated last night, with a 30% discount offer. This afternoon we held a Halloween Disco at school and the kindergarten children had a Halloween theme day. Most of the students participated in the disco, with a junior one straight after school and a senior one at 4:30 pm. There was quite a varied costume theme, and for some obliviously a chance to dress up theme or no theme. While many of the costumes were shop purchased or very carefully made by a tailor, a few of the children wore home made costumes and looked just as splendid.
If one has to make comparisons, I was impressed by the attitude of the students. Everyone had a good time, no one was excluded. No one rubbished anyone or their costume. Everyone participated in games and dancing, including apple bobbing. There was a break for food and everyone lined up and took one or two food items, no one grabbed handfuls of chips or sweets etc. If someone spilt a drink, they actually took responsibility and cleaned the spillage with paper towels. So top marks to the students.......
And waiting outside the gym door were the anxious and inquisitive Mums in their finery, enjoying the proceedings.

Ere ere! What about the young blokes? Dressing up must be fun as long as they miss out the Trick or Treat!
Well, we had five lovely young girls (in fancy costumes) knocking on our door and it was very nice talking to them and yes, we found a treat for them. They said they had no nasty tricks for those who didn't give treats.
