Today I went out to the market and on my return 45 minutes later this tree had fallen across the street. Only the motorbikes could pass, and some of them came onto the footpath to do so, which isn't unusual. People were rushing around gathering the brownpods that were growing on the tree. The pods look like and are the shape of broad beans, only brown and fury like a Kiwi fruit. I went to take a photo of the bike basket full of pods and one woman flew into hysterics yelling at me in Vietnamese. She obviously thought I was going to steal her lot, out of her bike basket. An onlooker was fascinated with my interest, and told me that you peel the pods and can eat the fruit inside. She called it cumin or turmin. Soon the "district council" men arrived. I'm not sure how they got there as there was no evident truck or motorbikes but they did have official uniforms on. They studied the root system of the tree and measured the length and circumference of the trunk. A while later they used a chainsaw to saw the trunk into logs, and various bystanders were taking the logs away. Only the branches remain on the side of the road for the street sweepers to collect them. The street sweepers walk around the city in their orange uniforms pushing huge big dumper bins, sweeping the streets with brooms and collecting rubbish. Most rubbish on the streets is collected by women before the street sweepers arrive. These recyclers pick up cans, cardboard, bottles, plastics etc. You see them squatting sorting it all out and then you see the back of the push bikes loaded with their recycling eg empty plastic bottles. Recycling, and cleaning the streets is an opportunity for some people to earn a living here in HCM City as there is no welfare system. Its sad really that the recyclers and the street sweepers are all women, and the recyclers much older women, all eking out an existence.
