International week

This week is International week in our school. The week is dedicated to learning a little more about the 22 international nationalities that make up our school and fostering the spirit of community. Each of the rooms has taken on the theme of a country and decorated their room accordingly.The hall ways have been decorated. In the foyer and hall we have various international games and crafts available for the children to learn and play. On Wednesday there is an International restaurant set up in the canteen, selling foods from many of the nations, to the students. Some of the parents from a nationality have decorated the hall-ways with clothing and artifacts from their home land. India and Vietnam have made stunning displays. On Wednesday a Vietnamese man is coming into the Vietnamese stand to play traditional musical instruments. On Friday is our dance spectacular.

Fagan from Kindy, and I are the only Kiwis. Today we had a flag parade, where each nation walked behind the flag bearer. Little Fagan wore a traditional grass skirt and carried the flag. He won the hearts of the whole school.
My room was the assembly point for the 54 South Koren students in our school. They all looked so beautiful in their national dress. The girls with their stiff petticoats, flouncing out their traditional skirts. Each with a beautiful traditional teaser in their hair. I talked with one Koren girl who came later to my class and asked her where her beautiful dress was? Oh Ms Jocelyn it's so hot to wear because its made up of 5 layers!. I felt underdressed in my T shirt with a silver fern up the front and black trousers. For me South Korea were the most spectacular in their traditional dress.
Looking around my classes I believe we really are in a melting pot. The students, mostly being Asia all blend in together, work together, play together and support each other. There is not a separatist culture or any elitism. We are British International School.
