It is National Day on 2nd December. EVERYONE gets in behind National Day and they acknowledge and celebrate the founding and formation of the Emirates. For the last 2 weeks we have been having assembly items based on the UAE culture etc. Lots of flag waving, dances and remembering Sheikh Zayed, our beloved father, who bought the Emirates together.
Today was even more special than the day before with everyone dressing up in national colours. The grade 2 children did a wee balloon waving static dance while the grade 6 children sang. The dance was so wonderful. Every little sweetheart was dressed in either a red, black, green or white dress, the colours of the flag, and they sat forming the flag.
Why do I love the Emirates so much? They know how to acknowledge and celebrate their culture and their history. Its simple stuff but its really effective, like the scarves, the coloured shayla, the earrings etc. Its not fueled with alcohol, or spending zillions, its honest genuine love for the country, and the people who make up the country. It's a statement, and everyone joins in. Not in an over the top flashy way, just in a modest way, but a very patrotic inclusive way. Yes they know how to celebrate and I'm so pleased to be part of that process.

You are very fortunate to be able to experience such culture. NZ had a celebration today of a different kind, the memorial service for the 29 coal miners who perished in the Pike River Mine explosion. A very sad occasion, televised live nationally. 2 minutes silence throughout the country at 2 pm this afternoon. A very sad and reflective moment.
