Out and about in Sarejavo

On the recommendation of our landlord I ventured out of the old town into the newer suburbs  to visit the History Museum. This museum while tiny,  documents the struggle of all Sarejaveans in their quest to survive the hardships and the atrocities of 3.5 years. While most of the displays were photos and captions their were some static displays and some armaments. The photos told the story, including a before and after display from a photographer. His work showed the war torn buildings and scenes and then the same scene in 2011. Buildings in Sarejavo have all had a face lift, paint and plaster covers many pockmarks and destruction. The buildings retain their culture and authenticity, looking fresh. A very pretty city.

A very large board documented the struggle and break up of Yugoslavia.. In various places on this trip I have had sympathies with various ethnic groups, and then in other places that same ethnic group have been the aggressors. The Muslims and Jews seem to be victims all around, and the Serbian Army the dominant aggressors. Having written this, Nemo told me he is the product of a mixed marriage, Muslim Mum and Serb Dad. His Dad chose not to fight with the Serbs but to stay in Sarejavo. This one story of course reflects the huge ethnic melting pot that Yugoslavia had become. Neighbours were neighbours until political  legislation basically forced them to take sides. Politics, the one word with such a detrimental effect.

On walking outside into the sunlight  I  suddenly became very aware of my surroundings. Every way I turned I could see the hilltops. Across the road was the infamous Holiday Inn now freshly painted and looking remarkable. In the back ground beautiful glass towers glinting in the sun.

On the road outside leading into town, Snippers Alley, now with a drive through McDonalds and the Golden Arches  indicating a normal life existence. Young and old walked along the road, caught trams, played in the park and paraded around in the Bosinan football team colours. Tonight their football team plays USA, so the city is a wash with football fever. People crowd the cafes and shady spots, drink coffee and beer and talk. A melting pot of races, of tourists and locals, avoiding the melting sun. What a great city to explore and what great people.
