Every class in British International School has 2 timetabled physed lessons a week. We have specialist physed teachers, fabulous pools and a gym gymnasium. While the class are timetabled for physed lessons the class teacher has a non contact period. Kris the Year 5 across the corridor from my lab has been teaching her class line dancing as an aside to the physed lessons, and the students love it.
Today I was passing while they were dancing so snapped these pictures. Kris is a bit of a late adopter as far as technology is concerned, however she really tries to use technology in an interesting and different way. She has found a Youtube line dance video and plays it through the data projector, so the atmosphere is created of being in an exercise routine. The head dancer calls the moves, the online audience dance and the students follow along. One of the reasons I think Year 5 love this dancing is that all the students have their eyes on the white board watching and moving with the instructor. The students don’t seem self conscious or watch each other. And the biggest converts, the boys.
Line dancing came from the cowhand era, where the males could "dance" with out the need for females, and each and everyone could perform vaying moves. With that thought in mind, is there a conection to the fact that the boys in Kris's class are very good at line dancing and enjoy the routines. Many of these boys are not fit sporty boys, or well co-ordinated boys and yet they really radiate pleasure from participating. Is it because they are at one with the music? Is it because they are focusing and no one is looking or caring?
