Higher and higher

Over the last two days I've had some wonderful rides into the Spanish country side which was one of the goals for this leg of the adventure. Tuesday ride was to a place called Via de Verdi. Before the Civil War the government built a railway network which connected a group of small villages. During the war the lines were torn up and the metal used for munitions, without ever being used. Now the line is used for recreation like the Otago Railride. Our ride passed a protected vulture colony. The visitor information centre has a huge telescope where you are able to watch the birds. On the journey back we rested and watched the birds circling in the thermos gaining elevation before flying off hunting. During this ride we also rode through a large number of tunnels which are illuminated, including one that is 931 m long. Exciting stuff.
Yesterdays ride took me way up into the serious Andulusian mountains. We stopped not quite at the top at an altitude of 1000m. Coming back we had massive downhills and the the long slog out of the valleys. I was so pleased to make the huge uphills without getting off. Altitude with attitude. The only thing higher, the craggy mountain rocks and some circling vultures 50 k away from their colony.
