On December 2 we celebrate 39 years since the formation of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed managed to amalgamate the trucial states to form the UAE, so its a pretty special time in the UAE calender. All the streets have their festive type lights up and turned on. The date palms down the median strip of most roads are adorned with coloured lights, the round abouts in Al Ain, of which there are 350, have displays all lit up, giving the whole place a real festive glow. The shops are selling Emirate flags, pins, clothing, jewelery, hair ties etc all in the distinctive red, white, green and black. queen Elizabeth has been here for the last 3 days on a state visit, her first for 31 years. Way back in 1979 she opened the World Centre in Dubai, then the tallest building, all 149 meters and 39 floors. Today I booked our family into an apartment building on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai that has 48 floors and is dwarfed by other building around it, including the Burg Khalifia the newest tallest building at 1500 meters

I wonder if anyone over there uses eco-bulbs? I see that the UAE has at least three sources of electricity generation - gas, solar and nuclear power. Obviously no shortage to worry them.
