Today's walk, while long was definitely a walk of contracts. We waited in Ravello until the rain showers had passed and then followed the trail up to the tiny village of Pontone. From Pontone we headed up the ridge and a rather steep climb 169 steep steps but who is counting, onto the cliff tops high above Altrani. This was the medieval defence system Torro dello Zirro. These fortifications while offering spectacular views of both Atrani and Almafi also offered the protection in times gone by.
We crossed back into Pontone once again before heading off to the nature reserve Valle dello Ferriere which when translated means the valley of the mills. This area is a lovely wooded area in the base of a valley with a steam flowing through the valley floor. In times gone by the water s was shifted in various aqueducts into Amalfi, and also harnessed to grind grain. As the valley floor widened we approached Amalfi through huge citrus orchards. While Ravello is known for its ceramics Amalfi is renown for its lemon products. 6 hours later two rather tired ladies arrived with weary bodies. While tired this had definitely been a fabulous day. Our hotel is right on the sea front in Amalfi, so what better therapy than to sit on the balcony and listen to the waves lap on the foreshore and people watch.
Amalfi is the largest town on the coast, a haven for cruise liners, a central place for buses traveling around the region and a place where a lot of walkers pass, or stay. It's a happening place.
