No trip to the Naples area is complete without a visit to Pompeii, so we followed the crowd boarded the train and wandered around the area. Pompeii is under the shadow of Mt Vesuvius. Looking up at the volcanoes you can actually see she blew her top and rained molten ash down on the area. I have in my travels visited other archeological sites, however this one would possibly be the most "dug out".
Inside some of the buildings, especially the bath houses and the steam rooms the frescos are still clearly visible. These places seem to be mostly intact. We overheard a guide say that the people hid in here from the eruption, only eventually to die because the ash deposits blocked the doorways and corridors, and there was no escape. The bakers ovens are very evident and very similar to the ones that we saw as we wandered around Selcuk in Turkey. It's amazing the cross overs between there and here in Italy.
Also very evident were the selfie sticks and the hundreds of people taking selfies.jenny and I have decided to take our own selfies, without the use of the stickes. You will have to agree our shots are dismal in comparison.
