We arrive in Amman to be met by Essam, our guide and driver, and begin our Jordan sojourn by traveling through the desert, south to Petra. Much of Jordan is desert, however they distinguish the different areas by type. We are traveling through the stoney desert, stopping at Kerak and Shaubak to look at 2 castles. These castles were built by the Romans on the much traveled route from Egypt in the Sth to Damascus in the Nth. Shaubak is in a very commanding position, close to a spring, with views away down the valley to watch the approaching camel caravans. Jesus traveled and preached in this area during his time in the ministry. The chapel was built when he was 31, each stone representing a year of his life. At the close of the day I sat on the hill top with the township of Petra behind me. Looking down I could see the route to the Petra valley and watch the tourists walk the dusty road to the ancient city, knowing that tomorrow I will be a hot, tired traveler walking this very route.

It's hard for us to imagine that things can be that old and still standing. It looks all dry and brown. Imagining being warm.

Those builders of old did amazing things when you think of the tools we have today.
