As a fun way to end our unit on QR codes I'd promised the students a QR code treasure hunt. So today year 6 went hunting for gems of information using their portable devices and QR codes strategically placed around the school. To complete the activity students had to think about the clue given eg food guide becomes a plate, and find the QR code. In this case the code was on the door to the canteen. When scanned using the QR code on the device the information was on healthy eating, and the portions of what types of food goes on a plate. The students had to take a self portrait to show they had found the code, write down the www, a fact and move on to the next clue. However I had been slightly cunning and prepared 10 different trails with different clues, and each group left the classroom a minute apart so no group was the same.
Some of the wee sweethearts managed to think laterally about the clues, find the codes and record the information. eg for the word food and plate they needed a visit to the canteen.This treasure hunt took ages to set up and with some activities some students were rather nonplused about the whole thing, while others rushed madly about not matching clues and QR codes. On the whole this definitely demonstrated how learning can be fun, with devices and out of the classroom.
As with every learning activity there is always a group without a device, so I lent them my iPad. looking back at the photos, I can see this group failed to follow directions, why is that a surprise. They didn't take any photos of the pair of them at the code but rather one of them at the code, why is that not a surprise. Tony is one of those kids with a huge beaming smile, the ones you have in every class, and Eugene the photographer is one of those kids that has to take control and fiddle with the technology.
