Cafe Sua Da

 Cafe sua da, Vietnamese iced coffee with milk. The milk is like condensed milk giving the coffee a slightly sweet taste. Delicious. Normally I drink my cafe sua da from more of a takeaway local street seller with the plastic chairs on the side of the street. This coffee is not the real deal, not top quality Vietnamese coffee and not too strong. However yesterday I met up with Tue my teaching assistant in a local coffee shop for cafe sua da. This is the genuine Vietnamese strength coffee, the real deal so to speak. The coffee arrives in a small stainless steel 'bowl" resting on the top of your cup. As time goes by the coffee drips down into the cup through the filter  in the bottom of the bowl. The milk is already in the bottom of the cup. When the coffee has dripped through you stir in the milk,  and then pour all the coffee into the glass of ice. Very nice and rather strong if you are a coffee connoisseur.

The Vietnamese enjoy their coffee, and taking coffee with friends whether it be on the side of the street or in a coffee shop is part of the daily ritual. Taking coffee may last and hour of so. Coffee conversation and companionship, a way of life here in Vietnam.
