The Toymaker
Year 1 IPC topic is called the Toymaker. To integrate this into ICT the students all got a card with an alphabet letter on and they had to create a picture of a toy corresponding to that letter for our virtual toyshop. Some students really used their imaginations and came up with interesting toys or interesting pictures of that toy. Now the fun starts. They are going to use a multimodal writing frame inside PowerPoint to insert their toy picture and write a definition or description of the toy. This was a really grat tip from Tim Rylands. Check out this blog post if you are interested in the multimodal writing frame. To write in a multimodal writing frame the user has to be in presentation mode of PowerPoint. I was trying to show the students which icon to press to get into presentation mode. One of the brighter ones said quite accurately, "oh you click on that thing that looks like a toilet" Well yes that is an apt description. Instantly everyone was clicking on the correct icon and we were away.Out of the mouths of children!
I'm sure you can identify a zoo, a ballerina on a music box, a dice, a football and a tiger, marbles, a Ninja, a pig, some teddies and a kite..
