I began using Portaportal last year as an alternative for teachers to use with their students. Yesterday we had quite a discussion around the networking side of Delicious and felt that Portaportal takes that risk away.Portportal works in a very similar way to Delicious when saving your book marks. The one point of difference is sharing your book marks with others. When using Portaportal they access your list as guests. As guests they cannot make changes to your book marks or network off in tangents to other sites. Its wusiwug. This I felt was a bonus for schools and the safety of their students clicking into this was saved by 317 others and networking through someone elses bookmarks. The downside of course is the students are restricted to the bookmarks you have found and they can not save their own. This is not entirely true. Thinking creatively......If you have a Room 3 Portaportal site and an agreed log in then the Room 3 students can save sites from where ever, when ever. I'd be interested to hear how you find Portaportal if you are using it, and how this works for your class/ students.

Hi Jocelyn, will definitely have a look at portaportal. Re the Networking issue in del.icio.us, if I am setting up for student access I turn the networking option off in settings, this way if a teacher is setting up for student access they cannot see the networking, subscriptions etc.
This does not get around the issue if students are logged in as in your example but I guess it's not called social book marking for nothing and is one of those things we need to modify when using with students ie:comment moderation etc when using Web 2.0 tools
